How Much Can The Sun Affect Your Skin?

We are all aware that the sun's rays can have a positive side, like brightening your mood, giving your body vitamin D, and making you feel healthier overall. But the sun can also be very dangerous when your skin is not protected correctly. Taking in too much of the ultraviolet rays in sunlight can cause wrinkling, sun spots, sagging skin, and even skin cancer. In this blog we will be going over a few ways that the sun can damage your skin and how to prevent it.

For one, it is a good start to know that the lighter your skin is, the more easily it can be damaged by the sun. Even so, it is beneficial for everyone, no matter what skin color, to take preventative measures to protect your skin from the sun. The amount of damage you can receive from the sun can depend on

  • The time of day

  • Whether you are near reflective surfaces

  • The season

You are much more likely to get sunburn in the middle of the day. Even on cloudy days exposure to the sun matters. UV rays are able to pass through the clouds. Reflective surfaces include water, white sand, concrete, snow, and ice. All of these surfaces reflect the sun's UV rays. In the summertime the intense sunlight can cause more damage than the sunlight in other seasons. You can actually feel it. So how can we protect our skin in situations where you are exposed? Try to

  1. Avoid exposure to the sun - spend less time in the sun from 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. When you are outdoors try and find shade when you can. It is good to wear clothing that blocks the sun. And last, wear sunglasses that block the UV rays from hitting your eyes.

  2. Use sunscreen- apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go out into the sun. reapply every 2-3 hours while you are in the sun and after you sweat a lot or swim.
